The last of our record winter snow pack is departing from the hills and water levels are finally back to their normal levels and clarity– which means: the fly fishing is great!
The dry fly fishing heated up not a moment too soon this summer. Our Westslope Cutthroat friends started rising to the surface for consistent action the same week that the Federation of Fly Fishers International Conclave came drifting into town. Fly fishermen from around the world converged on the Flathead Valley to experience our world class native fishery. All these fishermen are gone now so you have the rivers all to yourself.
Our guides are returning daily reporting great success with beginners and experienced fishermen alike. Daily air temps remain cool so there is no real lull in the action through out the day. It has been a windy summer so the afternoon floaters are fighting the wind frequently. They are using general attractor patterns both on the surface and sub-surface (foam bodies, stimulators, beadheads, Kauffman’s, etc.– stop in Glacier Outdoor Center around 8 am to view the guides picking their poison from our vast fly selection. The North Fork of the Flathead has cleared up faster than the Middle Fork so we expect to see sizeable fish on the North Fork first. We are taking trips on both Forks so feel free to call the Fly Shop at the Outdoor Center for advice on anything fly fishing.
If you are looking for some new fishing gear now is the time to grab it. We are having a ragging sale here at the Outdoor Center on just about everything– I am talking deals like 40% off Simms wading boots! It is worth a trip to West Glacier.
